MITCHELL — The Monon South Trail has been awarded $1 million in federal funding to extend trail construction in Mitchell as part of a broader appropriations package approved by the U.S. House. The funding is included in a federal appropriations package that provides nearly $7.5 million in Community Project Funding for Indiana’s 9th Congressional District, which is represented by U.S. Rep. Erin Houchin, R-Salem. Planned improvements include trailhead amenities, paving the trail between Warren Street and Grissom Street, and improving the grade of the trail crossing at Main Street. “Mitchell’s residents are very grateful for this opportunity to finish the construction of the Monon South Trail in our community,” Mitchell Mayor Don Caudell said. In addition to the Monon South Trail funding, Community Project Funding for Indiana’s 9th District includes $4 million for the Charlestown Blight Elimination Project, $1.2 million for Indiana University 10th Street safety improvements, $975,000 for Georgetown State Road 64 sidewalk improvements, and $175,000 for Sam Peden Community Park improvements.
