The Nevada Attorney General’s office asked a district court Wednesday to dismiss the federal government’s case against Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar over his refusal to hand over the state’s unredacted voter rolls. The government’s legal standing to demand unredacted voter rolls hinges on Title III of the 1960 Civil Rights Act. The DOJ believes it gives the Attorney General “sweeping power” to obtain records related to the voting process. The DOJ has sued dozens of states, as well as the District of Columbia, for unredacted voter rolls. The motion to dismiss states that the government’s request would violate federal and state privacy laws.
