I admit, I took a look at the stories when the nominees for the 2026 Oscars were announced last week. When Gregory Maguire rewrote the story 30 years ago from the perspective of the Wicked Witch, the good/evil debate got deeper, murkier and more interesting, at least to me. As is the case with Maguire’s approach, it’s Elphaba’s Wicked Witch who best understands the dynamics of Ozian morality. In more irony, it is the Wizard who defines the need for a Wicked Witch. But is there a good witch out there somewhere to burst the bubble?
