Homeowners across South Africa are facing uncertainty over the registration of their solar power systems, as Eskom and some municipalities attempt to enforce compliance with unclear deadlines and requirements.
The electricity utility has threatened fines and potential disconnections for households that have not registered their behind-the-meter solar systems.
Energy specialist Chris Yelland, managing director at EE Business Intelligence, emphasised that while registering solar systems is important for monitoring grid stability, it should not be enforced by Eskom.
Throughout 2025, the utility ramped up efforts to secure household compliance, citing safety and grid stability as primary reasons.
Yelland believes the push may be motivated more by revenue concerns than grid safety.
