Graduate students at the University of Mississippi wrestle with Oxford’s housing crisis, as do many others, but for grad students, there are additional challenges. “There is an extreme housing crisis and a high rate of housing rent, which created stress when I was looking for housing,” said Anika Tabasum Barsha, a graduate teaching assistant. The city grew by 60.9% from 2000 to 2010 and 43.4% from 2010 to 2020, according to the Oxford Affordable Housing Commission’s 2024 report. “That takes the home off the market, which could potentially be rented to graduate students or school students,” Gray said. There is a group of people who have been working to provide graduate students with housing that might be on-campus housing, which could help with affordability.
