Former President George Bush, who was also a director of the CIAJanuary 29 1976The Central Intelligence Agency yesterday prepared to take on a new director as Congress in Washington weighed methods of making the agency more accountable to Congress and the public. The new chief of the CIA – its fourth in as many years – will be Mr George Bush, a former Texas Congressman, US Ambassador to the United Nations and Republican Party chairman. The idea was strongly opposed both by the CIA and Mr Ford on grounds that disclosure would give clues to foreign enemies to the scope of intelligence operations. As future US president George HW Bush became CIA director, Congress looked to rein in some of its powers. We wish to combine in partnership with the loyalist tradition to work for the good of the Northern Ireland community”.
