Michael Oliver, of Keswick Avenue, Barrow, pleaded guilty to assault by beating at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on January 26. “The defendant started driving in an erratic manner following a conversation about using her car," he said. In mitigation, Andy Gallagher said: “There was a bottle of wine in the car which she had been drinking on the way home. “The defendant then inadvertently grabbed hold of his wife which caused the bruising she complained of. This was an isolated one-off incident.”Magistrates fined Oliver £625 and ordered him to pay £100 in compensation to the victim.
