The name Fivemiletown comes from the fact it is located five Irish miles from its nearest neighbours of Clogher, Brookeborough and Tempo. It has had other names throughout history as well, including its original Irish name of Baile na Lorgan, which means ‘Townland of the long ridge’. That was anglicised as Ballynalurgan while it was also called Mount Stewart after Sir William Stewart – who founded the village in 1619. The village did have the Fivemiletown Creamery which was set up in 1898 and was the only speciality cheese maker in Northern Ireland after beginning production in 1972. Other sports in the area include Fivemiletown United Football Club who compete in the Mid-Ulster Football League.
