Newport City Council wants to install 70 solar panels on the Grade II*-listed Civic Centre roof as part of efforts to cut carbon emissions and save on energy costs. The panels will be on a flat roof, not visible from ground level to keep the building's iconic look intact. The current state and use of the Civic Centre has led to this push for new energy solutions. A new structural appraisal finds the roof can handle the extra load from the solar panels as long as safety measures are in place. The solar power plan is open for public comments until February 6, before a final decision is made.
