We tend to think that ghost towns, with tumbleweeds rolling down dusty, deserted streets, are to be found mainly in the Old West. But Olmsted County, smack dab in the Upper Middle West, has a few ghost towns of its own. While never a bustling boomtown, Cummingsville, like most ghost towns, did have aspirations of someday being something more than it became. In 1948, the Cummingsville School was closed, and students were sent to Chatfield. But what was once planned to be the hub of the township is now one of Olmsted County’s ghost towns.
