St. Paul considers ordinance to require federal agents to show clear identificationThe St. Paul City Council is advancing a proposal to require clear identification for all law enforcement agencies, including federal, operating in the city. It stems from confusion and calls for accountability related to immigration enforcement operations, according to council members. It’s the first of what’s expected to be a series of ordinances to place local guidelines on the way federal agents operate in the city. “It’s important for our constituents and our residents to say, ‘I know which law enforcement agency this is.’ It’s also important for accountability for federal agents or local law enforcement.”Noecker explained St. Paul police would be responsible for enforcing the ordinance. “Our police department can’t interfere with federal law enforcement that is going in the course of the lawful duties, something that will impede in their actual investigation or that work,” said Noecker.
