In addition to being found in 23 species of bats throughout Asia, as well as in bats in Ghana and Madagascar, the Nipah virus has been isolated from the urine of bats in Malaysia. However, Nipah virus infections in humans have not been reported outside South and Southeast Asia, and most outbreaks have occurred in rural or semi-rural areas.
