It’s a strong start that offers a clear progression from her previous album, but the following single Guardian immediately takes a backwards step, offering little that ‘Negative Spaces’ didn’t already do. The closing title track calls back to The Center’s Falling Out, its clear Knocked Loose influence ending the album on its most furious note. For all the fun to be had with ‘Empty Hands’ it simply doesn’t feel as experimental and confrontational as Poppy can be.
