A Wisconsin lawmaker is leading the charge to create the state’s first national park.
Congressman Tom Tiffany (WI-07) reintroduced the Apostle Islands National Park and Preserve Act this month, which aims to designate Apostle Islands National Lakeshore as a National Park.
Apostle Islands, a group of 21 islands in Lake Superior at the northern tip of Wisconsin, features sea caves, sandy beaches and the most lighthouses in the National Park system.
“Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands are a national treasure and deserve the distinction of becoming the state’s first National Park,” Rep. Tiffany said in a statement.
Sand Island would become a national preserve to ensure continued hunting access and management, and protection of the Apostle Islands National Park and Preserve would remain under the National Park Service.
