Over the past five years, the Old Age Pension has risen steadily. The most recent census data with a published age breakdown remains the 2012 Population and Housing Census, which recorded 38,319 people aged 65 years and over. In the absence of those figures, it is difficult to reconcile a pensioner population of 95,000 with what is known about Guyana’s age structure. According to the United Nations Population Fund, about 7% of Guyana’s population was likely to be aged 65+ in 2025. If it is indeed the case that Guyana’s population of elderly is growing rapidly, then that is a current issue to be addressed now that requires a more explicit long-term vision.
