Dear Editor,I seek your indulgence to respond to the September 27, 2025 letter by MP Sherod Duncan titled ‘The $30 Million Low-Income Mortgage Ceiling Confession’ following the recent announcement by the Government of Guyana to increase the low-income mortgage ceiling from $20M to $30M this year. The ceiling increase therefore reduces the cost of borrowing. I hasten to add that though the ceiling has been raised to $30m, a tiered affordability model guides the PPP/C Government’s housing policy. “Low-income” in housing policy is an affordability category, not a sociological label. So, the expansion of the pool of lenders does not signal that commercial banks are reaching their risk limits as Mr. Duncan incorrectly states.
