More than 75 households in the West Watooka squatting area, Region 10 have been grappling with severe flooding for over two weeks, following what residents describe as poorly executed emergency works on a roadway and drainage system near the Emerald River. Stabroek News visited the community yesterday and observed waterlogged yards, submerged homes, damaged livestock pens, and residents struggling to move about through muddy, contaminated floodwaters. Several sections of the community remain inaccessible while others require residents to wade through knee-deep water. Residents say the flooding began after a culvert and roadway structure collapsed during construction related to a nearby roundabout project. Emergency repairs were later carried out, but villagers claim the drainage pipe was improperly installed and subsequently blocked during backfilling and compaction.
