News January 29th, 2026The St. John’s Regional Fire Department proudly announces the retirement of Captain Gina Burke, a trailblazer who made history as the department’s first female firefighter. Captain Burke began her groundbreaking career in 1992 when she was hired at the newly opened Mount Pearl Station, marking a significant milestone for the department and the Region in which SJRFD serves. Throughout her career, Captain Burke rose through the ranks, earning her promotion to Fire Lieutenant in April 2009 and later achieving the rank of Fire Captain in May 2013. “Captain Burke has been an inspiration to all of us,” said Fire Chief Sherry Colford. The St. John’s Regional Fire Department extends heartfelt thanks to Captain Burke for her years of service and dedication to public safety and wishes her the best in her new journey.
