High Society, The Big Chill, The Karate Kid, Glory, Philadelphia, Clueless, The Incredibles, The Grand Budapest Hotel and the first mainstream documentary from Ken Burns have been inducted into the National Film Registry, it was announced Thursday.
This earliest known Asian American film production featured Japanese actors playing Japanese characters and was produced by the Los Angeles-based Japanese American Film Co. Made when Hollywood studios were not yet the dominant storytellers of the American film industry, The Oath of the Sword highlights the significance of early independent productions created by and for Asian American communities.
In 2023, a new preservation reproducing the original tinting was done in collaboration with the Japanese American National Museum, and the film has become widely admired.
