UK envoy calls for dialogue, civilian protection as violence escalates in Jonglei

The United Kingdom Ambassador to South Sudan has raised concern over the worsening security and humanitarian situation in Jonglei State, calling for renewed dialogue and stronger protection of civilians.
The remarks come amid escalating fighting between government and opposition forces in parts of the country, particularly in northern Jonglei State.
Ambassador Ashley also called for clear and firm orders to all armed forces to respect international humanitarian law, with particular emphasis on the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure.
“Ambassador Ashley met with Minister of Defence, Lt Gen Chol Thon Balok, and discussed the very worrying situation in Jonglei.
Ambassador Ashley urged renewed dialogue for peace, clear orders to respect international humanitarian law, protect civilians & prevent child recruitment and reopened humanitarian access,” read the statement issued by the embassy on Thursday.
