Anthony Albanese has vowed to welcome Israeli President Isaac Herzog on a visit to Australia next month, in a move set to cause further friction inside Labor amid a bitter spilt in the party. Mr Herzog will depart Israel on February 8 for a five-day visit to Australia in response to the Bondi Beach terrorist attack which killed 15 innocent lives at a Hanukkah event on December 14. The party’s most senior Muslim had then later issued a statement saying she understood the significance of Mr Herzog’s visit to the Jewish community. In open letter to every Labor MP, Jewish Labor co-conveners Adam Slonim and Michael Borowick called for widespread support for the visit and dubbed Mr Herzog a “bridge-builder”. “The presence of this Israeli leader will distress and anger millions of Australians, including Labor members and Labor voters,” he said in a statement.
