SoftBank Corp partnered with Ericsson’s Japan unit to deploy an AI-enabled optimisation system using Massive MIMO to automatically improve coverage patterns in response to traffic changes. They added the system automatically optimises horizontal and vertical coverage patterns of Massive MIMO base stations. SubscribeThey noted in such locations user distribution changes significantly between normal periods and during events, requiring flexible base station control. To address this, the companies conducted trials to validate automated traffic optimisation using AI-enhanced external base station control. Last August, SoftBank selected Ericsson as one of its suppliers of 4G and 5G network equipment for an upgrade of its RAN infrastructure in parts of Japan.
