Recent deaths raise issues of bridge safety in Lowell
['Melanie Gilbert']
Lowell Sun
LOWELL — The City Council moved quickly to respond to the tragic news that a UMass Lowell student allegedly jumped to their death from the Howe Bridge earlier this month.
The popular pedestrian and car crossing connects the North and East campuses of UMass Lowell.
The Howe Bridge is one of several crossings over the Merrimack River, including the Rourke Bridge, O’Donnell Bridge, Ouellette Memorial Bridge, John E. Cox Memorial Bridge, and the Hunts Falls Bridge, also known as the Quinn-Holmes Bridge, all of which are under the control of MassDOT.
The letter requested a meeting to discuss urgent safety issues and outlines the city’s intent to convene a working group with state partners and UMass Lowell.
Implementing suicide-prevention barriers such as safety netting within Lowell where such incidents have occurred, or which present a demonstrated public safety concern, could require significant resources.
