North East council's anti-fraud team save £2.4 million in just six monthsThe team investigated fraud around housing and council tax in particularView Image The team investigated fraud around housing and council tax in particular (Image: PA)Almost £2.4 million has been saved and protected by Northumberland County Council’s corporate fraud team in the first six months of the 2025/26 financial year. ‌Of those cases, 47.5% involved council tax fraud and 39.3% from tenancy fraud at the council’s own properties and several of the county’s other social landlords. ‌In terms of cash, £505,698 was saved by tackling housing tenancy fraud where social housing properties were recovered or applications for housing were either refused or withdrawn. ‌The biggest saving in council tax investigations saw £101,155 saved from fraudulent single person discounts. Speaking at Wednesday’s meeting of the council’s audit committee, members praised the actions of the team.
