Residents fear for green belt amid proposals for nearly 20,000 new homes in North TynesideThousands of new homes are needed in North Tyneside according to the local authority but residents maintain concerns on overdevelopmentNorth Tyneside residents have expressed concerns over the council's proposed local plan which could change the face of the area with nearly 20,000 new homes by 2042. ‌The Local Democracy Reporting Service spoke to residents from North Tyneside’s Wellfield estate, each of whom had concerns over the council’s proposed draft ‘Local Plan’. ‌North Tyneside Council’s summary leaflet on the proposed states the local housing delivery targets stands at 18,440 by 2042 in order to accommodate an expected 17,000 extra residents. ‌A petition entitled ‘Stop new housing developments in North Tyneside, has amassed 3,915 guessing at the time of publication. “If we don’t plan for this now, young people growing up in North Tyneside may struggle to find a home here and have to leave the area.
