ActionSA has confirmed it will abstain from a motion of no confidence against Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero, distancing itself from growing pressure within the city’s fractured governing coalition. The motion, sponsored by Al Jama-ah, is due to be debated in the Johannesburg city council on Thursday. ActionSA said it believes the mayor has failed to improve basic services for residents, but stressed that it would not support what it described as last-minute political manoeuvring. The party’s decision to abstain means it will neither vote in favour of nor against the motion. It is understood that the ANC’s national and provincial leadership met overnight to discuss calls for the mayor to step aside.
