South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday accepted recommendations from a judicial inquiry into police corruption, directing the creation of a special task team to investigate senior officers and municipal officials facing allegations of murder, fraud and other crimes. The commission found prima facie evidence of wrongdoing against suspended Ekurhuleni acting police chief Julius Mkhwanazi and several other witnesses implicated during its proceedings. Public hearings resumed on Jan. 26 after pausing in December, with dozens more witnesses expected to testify in coming months. Julius Mkhwanazi was placed on suspension in November 2025 following recommendations of an internal audit investigation into allegations of misconduct. Ramaphosa said he expects all law enforcement agencies and other relevant criminal justice institutions to act with speed in implementing the commission’s recommendations.
