NYU Langone Health announced on Wednesday that the co-director of its Gastrointestinal Cancer Center is stepping up to lead the Perlmutter Cancer Center, one of the highest-ranked cancer hospitals in the United States. Before working at NYU Langone, Maitra earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery — equivalent to an MD — at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. He was a professor of pathology and oncology at Johns Hopkins University until 2013, when he moved to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He was also awarded the Team Science Award from the American Association for Cancer Research, which honors interdisciplinary teams that make impactful cancer discoveries, in 2013. 16 cancer hospital in the country by U.S. News and World Report, the center was founded in 1975 and is one of 57 cancer research centers to be designated a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute, which recognizes hospitals for leadership, resources and research output.
