A 21-year-old man has died in Walewale in the North East Region after an alleged attempt to steal electrical components from a power transformer ended in tragedy.
He is said to have climbed the transformer with the intention of removing copper cables when he was electrocuted.
The incident has reignited concerns about the growing trend of transformer vandalism and cable theft in the municipality.
He stated that no fewer than seven transformers have been targeted in recent times, including installations at the VRA office, Tianoba substation, Walewale agric warehouse, Nurses’ Training College substation, Akamara substation, the new Kukuazugu substation, and the A Milo substation.
According to him, these incidents have contributed significantly to the frequent power outages experienced by residents, particularly during the night.
