Crying, laughing and headaches are some of the unusual symptoms of orgasms that 86 women reported experiencing in a study led by Feinberg Prof. Lauren Streicher and co-authored by George Washington University Prof. James Simon. After hearing about patients’ unusual symptoms of peri-orgasmic phenomena, James Simon said he noticed how the symptoms affected their sexual lives. “The most common such patient was a woman who would have intractable headaches every time she had an orgasm,” James Simon said. He added that while the symptoms were rare in the study, researching this subject can help develop methods to improve women’s satisfaction with sexual experiences. She also noted previous National Institutes of Health funding cuts and grant terminations as recent restrictions toward the study of sexual health.
