2001Southeast Missouri State University may build a new residence hall for students to handle the school’s growing enrollment; the Board of Regents discussed that possibility during a weekend retreat at the Lodge of the Four Seasons at Lake of the Ozark; Southeast hasn’t built a new residence hall since the mid 1960s, when the Towers high-rise buildings were constructed; where a new residence hall would be built isn’t known. City officials want to carry out about $83.8 million in capital improvements in Cape Girardeau by 2006, including fire and police station improvements, a new public works facility, water and sewer system upgrades, street construction and park renovation; the only obstacle is finding the funds. 1976With a limit of $750,000 available for construction of a new county jail, the Cape Girardeau County Court has once again embarked upon a plan for the long-awaited facility, this time on a 48,139-square-foot site at Jackson; the court met Wednesday afternoon at Jackson with architect Thomas E. Phillip and three county officials and tentatively agreed to plan for a jail to accommodate a maximum of 70 prisoners, funds permitting; the City of Jackson has agreed to sell the land for the jail to the county for $1 and other considerations. Final form of an academic reorganization of present divisions and departments at Southeast Missouri State University is taking shape in the Faculty Senate, with action likely to come next week on amendments to a proposal drawn up by a special Governance Committee; President Robert E. Leestamper would like to present his own plans for administrative reorganization and the academic proposal to the Board of Regents in March.
