Dive Brief:T he Federal Reserve on Wednesday, in a decision with two dissents, held the main interest rate steady at a range between 3.5% and 3.75%, noting robust economic growth and signs of stability in the unemployment rate.
Dive Insight:Powell for several months has faced pressure from President Donald Trump to cut the main interest rate to as low as 1%.
Meanwhile, the unemployment rate in December edged lower to 4.4% from 4.5% in November but still exceeds the 4% level in January 2025.
Fed Governors Stephen Miran and Christopher Waller dissented against the policy decision, favoring a quarter-point reduction in the benchmark interest rate to a range between 3.25% and 3.5%.
Appointed by Trump, they have voiced concern in recent months about signs of weakness in the job market.
