This is a well-maintained pocket park surrounded by regimented rows of housing, and it has always been a patch of green in this part of suburban London. Empty fields were laid out with roads by the businessman, Sir William Lancaster, and a small school was built next to where the pocket park is today. Finally opened in 1903, it’s always been called Coronation Gardens, after the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902. This was installed in 1904 as a gift from Sir William Lancaster’s sisters and originally featured a bronze statue. Doubtless, one day that fence will be straightened, and the pocket park will gain a couple of extra square metres of land.
