Spread the wordThe Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, and the Movement for the Transformation of Nigeria (MOT!ON) have called on the National Assembly to transmit the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2025 promptly to the President for assent to enable early implementation ahead of 2027 general elections. The group made the call in a peaceful protest in Abuja on Wednesday at the National Assembly, over the delayed electoral reforms, stating that the timely passage was crucial to allow the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) adequate time for planning, implementation, and voter education. The action followed growing public concern over the failure of the National Assembly to conclude legislative work on the Electoral Act amendment in 2025, compounded by a prolonged parliamentary recess extending into 2026. The member of the Situation Room and the Co-convener, Bukola Idu, urged the National Assembly, most especially the Senate, to expedite action and pass the Electoral Amendment Bill faster than they were even doing, stating that the bill had dragged for the past three years. Also, Co-convener, Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room, Comrade Mma Odi, urged the Senate to pass the 2025 Electoral Amendment Bill adding that the House of Representatives passed it in December, and the Senate has been delaying its passage.
