Seeing the problem of homelessness all around is one thing; trying to help people off the streets and into shelter is quite another. But the endless effort must start somewhere, and that’s with solid data quantifying the scope of the problem to guide resource allocation. So it’s good that the annual Point in Time Count of unsheltered people resumed on Monday — a designated day of the year when volunteers and service providers fan out to interface with people living on the streets to gather data. The effort did not occur in 2025 — but in 2024, the count found 4,494 people experiencing homelessness statewide.
