Most of us rely on our motor vehicles for basic necessities, like buying groceries, doctor visits, and of course, getting to and from work. Currently in Massachusetts, a motorist’s driving license can be suspended for unpaid fines, fees and taxes, including unpaid speeding and parking tickets. A bill that would put an end to state driving restrictions for these civil offenses is making its way through the Legislature. Cyr’s bill was reported favorably by the Joint Transportation Committee in a unanimous vote and has been referred to the Senate Ways and Means Committee. While motorists should make earnest efforts to pay any overdue fines, these types of infractions shouldn’t deprive them of the ability to feed their families or make a living.
