Amid the global rise of right-wing populist movements in recent years, migrants and refugees have often paid the heaviest price as governments tighten border security, undertake mass deportation drives and enact draconian restrictions affecting refugees and asylum-seekers. Spain announced Tuesday that it intends to swim against that tide. Those eligible will be granted legal status and work authorization for up to one year. The measure is primarily intended to curb the exploitation of undocumented workers who are employed informally in a variety of professions. Speaking at a press conference, Spain’s migration minister Elma Saiz said it is a necessary step “to respond to a reality that exists on our streets” and is about “dignifying and recognizing people who are already in our country.”
