Buster Merryfield may have been born in Battersea, but he became an adopted son of the area in his later life, becoming part of the community. There were many contrasts between the man behind the beard and the character that made him a household - and much-loved - name. He came late, but instantly grew in the hearts of locals and became a cornerstone of some of British comedy's finest moments. Yet, while he may have filmed the series in the studios of the BBC, it was Dorset that was his home. He is buried in Verwood, linking the laughter of Peckham with the quiet dignity of the Dorset coastline that he came to cherish.
