Goodbye RTA, Hello NITA: Chicagoland Prepares for Reorganized Transit System
['Justin Franz']
Railfan & Railroad Magazine
Starting June 1, the Regional Transportation Authority, the agency overseeing Chicagoland transit, will be reorganized into the Northern Illinois Transit Authority.
The reorganization follows Illinois Gov.
JB Pritzker signing legislation last year to help the state’s major transit operators — Metra, Chicago Transit Authority, and Pace bus services — avoid a fiscal cliff.
As part of that, the agencies are being restructured to improve service coordination.
Eventually, a universal fare system will be implemented, making it easier to transfer between systems.
