The change follows a pilot scheme in the West Midlands and will now be rolled out to the North West, Yorkshire and Humberside, and Cymru-Wales regions. Under the new approach, cases will be reviewed by a second prosecutor before a final no-evidence decision is made. Ellie Reeves MP, Solicitor General, said: "Rape and sexual assault are abhorrent, causing long-lasting physical and emotional trauma to victims. The review takes place before any final decision to discontinue a case, offering survivors an extra safeguard that could result in the case being kept open. The expanded pilot will allow the Crown Prosecution Service to gather more data and determine the scheme’s potential for wider implementation.
