NEW YORK (WNYT) – Governor Hochul announced the SUNY system is set to adopt a new program to help prepare future teachers. Related: Hochul touts science-based reading instructionThe new “Science of Reading” framework will build on existing educator training courses, and is set to include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, reading comprehension, vocabulary, background knowledge, and more. “Every year, more than 5,000 students graduate from SUNY teaching programs and become part of classrooms in every corner of the state,” SUNY Chancellor John B. “Through the SUNY Science of Reading policy, our future educators will be better prepared through evidence-based literacy methods to ensure the best learning outcomes for the students who will rely on them.”Related: Students can apply free to nearly 130 colleges and universitiesSchool leaders say the “Science of Reading” framework applies immediately to all new SUNY programs. Current programs have until December 2026 to make any necessary changes.
