Yesterday, Jan. 27, we marked the day that the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp was liberated in 1945. For years, Holocaust education relied on proximity. Their teachers brought Holocaust survivors into the classroom, men and women who spoke plainly about what they endured. When my wife describes her teacher’s tattoo, I’m reminded that the Holocaust was made possible by the deliberate reduction of a person to a number. Jan. 27 marks the day the world found the courage to reject that logic.
