As leaders in the safe school space for many years (Passk12.org), we worked hard to communicate this message to the media. While the public deserves accurate information, extensive research and experience show that naming and amplifying the intentions of would-be attackers can do real harm. This “contagion effect” is well documented and has been acknowledged by journalists, law enforcement, and public health experts alike. Many news organizations have adopted guidelines that limit naming perpetrators and avoid detailing their plans, precisely because doing so saves lives. I urge your newsroom to consider these standards carefully and to prioritize public safety over sensational exposure.
