Councillor David Harrison said recent flooding has highlighted the importance of protecting natural floodplains, which help prevent water from each nearby homes. Large parts of Bartley Park in Totton are currently underwater, leaving the green space inaccessible following heavy rainfall from Storm Chandra. While the flooding has caused disruption, the Totton South ward councillor said it also showed why such land is vital. Flood plains allow excess water to spread safely, easing pressure on drainage systems and reducing the risk of homes being inundated. He said his concerns have been heightened by the scale of housing growth now expected in the district.
