Congressional Democrats are pressing Homeland Security and Justice Department officials for accountability following the deadly shootings of two U.S. citizens by federal agents in Minneapolis.
One letter notifies Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem of congressional investigations into the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti and demands DHS to preserve and turn over all records related to the shootings.
Thompson also requested evidence informing Trump administration officials’ statements calling Good and Pretti “domestic terrorists.”Thompson added that DHS will be expected to preserve evidence in any future incidents involving the use of force against American citizens.
It comes nearly one week after Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, including Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, called for the DOJ to open a civil rights investigation into Good’s shooting death.
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who leads the DOJ’s Office for Civil Rights, had previously said her office had no intention of opening a civil rights investigation into the shooting, a departure from how past administrations had handled similar incidents involving federal law enforcement.
