At first glance, it looks like more jobs for New Mexicans, but Bernalillo County Commissioner Eric Olivas says that’s not the case and has serious concerns. “I think that we see a lot of demand for data centers, obviously AI, and just computing power in general is a big issue. With more data centers eyeing the metro, Olivas wants to make sure they’re actually looking for ways to benefit New Mexicans and our limited resources. “If developers want public incentives, they must provide a real public benefit, not just promises,” said one speaker. “As AI and data centers expand, their impact on water, energy workers and the cost of living,especially in desert like, communities like ours must be taken seriously.
