IN a unique way, Sacred Heart Parish in Childers was part of the local Australia Day celebrations recently, but there was no sign of Crab Racing, BBQs or a live band playing pub rock. Instead, the parishioners participated in a special Mass to mark the day, offering a point of difference to their country community. “Catholic tradition has a long-held tradition of bringing the joys, hopes and challenges of our life or in this case our country, before God in prayer and thanksgiving,” parish priest Father Jack Ho said. “The Eucharist provided a moment to pause amid the many civil celebrations and acknowledge that Australia Day is not only about barbecues and flags, but also about gratitude, responsibility, and community,” Fr Ho said. Lamingtons were in abundance at the fellowship held afterwards, and of course, an Aussie cuppa as they gathered in friendship, recognising their own connections and camaraderie.
