KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) has expressed concern over serious allegations of sexual harassment made against Dwayne Vaz, member of parliament for Central Westmoreland and a representative of the People’s National Party (PNP), calling for a prompt, thorough and impartial investigation. JFJ noted that as an elected legislator, Vaz is empowered to debate and vote on laws governing gender equality, workplace protections and the prevention of harassment. JFJ referenced the Sexual Harassment (Protection and Prevention) Act, 2021, which defines sexual harassment as any unwelcome sexual advance that is offensive or humiliating, interferes with work or education, or creates a hostile environment. While acknowledging that Vaz has publicly denied the allegations, JFJ maintained that only a comprehensive, impartial and evidence-based investigation can establish the facts. JFJ further reminded the public that sexual harassment is a serious violation capable of causing significant harm, and cautioned that public discourse surrounding such allegations must avoid victim-blaming.
