From Jan. 12 to Feb. 12, this year’s Conquer the Cold challenge aims to use education, outreach, prizes and challenges to motivate people in Ann Arbor to choose sustainable transportation options in cold weather. The challenge is organized by the getDowntown initiative, a collaboration between the city of Ann Arbor and the Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority. Participants record green travel — including trips by foot, bike and bus — on the challenge platform. There is great flexibility in choosing a sustainable transportation lifestyle, and it doesn’t have to really be all or nothing. “There’s environmental sustainability, but I think there’s also an aspect of social and community sustainability,” Bassiouni said.
