KINGSTON, N.Y. — U.S. Rep. Pat Ryan said he received an “outrageous” response from Immigration and Customs Enforcement about his objections to plans to establish a detention center at a warehouse in the village of Chester in Orange County.
We’re only gonna get louder.”The planned ICE facility has drawn strong objections from Orange County officials and others in nearby counties.
Legislator Eric Stewart, who crafted the letter, said he worries that a facility nearby would lead to increased activity in Ulster County by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“I think that having such a facility in the neighboring county would encourage ICE to abuse and disappear people from Ulster County,” said Stewart, D-Hurley, in an interview Monday.
The Chester Town Board has come out against the proposal, as has Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus, Ulster County Executive Jen Metzger, state Sen. Michelle Hinchey, D-Saugerties, Assemblyman Brian Mahler, R-Walden, and U.S. Rep. Pat Ryan, D-Gardiner.
